Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2023

Moungi Bawendi is an American–Tunisian–French chemist. He is currently the Lester Wolfe Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Bawendi is known for his advances in the chemical production of high-quality quantum dots. For this work, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2023

Aalen University, Germany

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Miranda Fateri is a professor in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Aalen University. With a background in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, and materials science, she earned her PhD from RWTH Aachen University in Germany. Following her doctorate, she conducted postdoctoral research at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in close collaboration with the European Astronaut Centre (EAC), where she focused on advanced manufacturing technologies for space applications. Since 2019, Prof. Fateri has been leading research in additive manufacturing (AM) at Aalen University, with a dual focus on terrestrial applications and space exploration. For Earth-based applications, her work involves the development and optimization of AM processes for various materials, with particular emphasis on resource efficiency and lightweight structures. In the area of space research, Prof. Fateri investigates the use of in-situ resource utilization (ISRU), especially lunar regolith simulants, to support sustainable off-Earth construction. Her work includes exploring a range of processing techniques such as laser melting, solar sintering, casting, and microwave-based fabrication to enable additive manufacturing on the Moon and beyond.

Professor Chwee Teck Lim is the NUSS Chair Professor and Director of the Institute for Health Innovation and Technology at the National University of Singapore. He is also the Founding Director of the Singapore Health Technologies Consortium, a national initiative advancing health technology innovation. Prof Lim is globally recognised for his research on understanding the mechanics behind human diseases and pioneering novel medical technologies to transform healthcare. His prolific academic journey includes over 500 published journal articles and over 550 plenary/keynote/invited talks. A serial entrepreneur, he co-founded six startups with one achieving successful IPO in 2018. Prof Lim is globally recognized for his distinguished achievements by the over 100 research awards and honors including the Nature Lifetime Achievement Award for Mentoring in Science, Otto Schmitt Award, Vladimir K. Zworykin Award, Highly Cited Researcher, Asia’s Most Influential Scientist Award, ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award, Asian Scientists 100, Wall Street Journal Asian Innovation Award and the President's Technology Award. He is also an Elected Fellow of nine academies including the Royal Society (UK), National Academy of Inventors (US), IUPESM, IAMBE, AIMBE, ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology, Singapore National Academy of Science, Academy of Engineering, Singapore and Institution of Engineers, Singapore.

Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore

Dr. Yi Wei Daniel Tay is an Assistant Professor from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, where he earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. After receiving his Ph.D., he joined the University of California, Berkeley, as a visiting scholar, where he collaborated with leading experts in structural engineering and digital fabrication to explore innovative applications of 3D printing technologies in the construction industry. His research focuses on Additive Manufacturing (AM), with a strong emphasis on the rheology of shear-thinning materials, the development of sustainable and green composites, and the process control of extrusion-based AM techniques. Dr. Tay is particularly passionate about advancing 3D concrete printing to enhance construction efficiency, minimize material waste, and promote environmentally responsible building practices.

Tokai University, Japan

Dr. Helmut Takahiro Uchida is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Tokai University, with concurrent appointments in the Graduate School of Engineering and the Research Institute of Science and Technology. He earned his doctorate (Dr.rer.nat.) in physics from Georg-August-Universität Göttingen in Germany, following his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in engineering from Tohoku University. His research focuses on advanced materials, with particular expertise in hydrogen functional materials, fiber-reinforced composites, hydrogen storage alloys, and extreme environment materials. His work integrates disciplines such as materials physics, electrochemistry, plasma engineering, and vacuum technology. Dr. Uchida has also contributed to the fields of nanomaterials, thin films, and structural-functional materials. He is a member of several professional societies, including the Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP), the Hydrogen Energy Systems Society of Japan (HESS), and the Japan Institute of Metals and Materials (JIM).

Shlomo Magdassi is a professor of chemistry, at the Casali Center for Applied Chemistry, the Institute of Chemistry and the Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. Prof. Magdassi holds the Enrique Berman Chair in Solar Energy. His research focuses on colloid science, and in particular on formation, formulation and applications of novel micro and nanoparticles. These particles can be used as active components in functional inks and coating, for example light absorbing particles for solar energy devices, and metal nanoparticles and CNTs for 2D and 3D printing. He is the editor of three books, among them “The chemistry of inkjet inks”. In addition to his scientific publications, he also has various inventions on applications of colloids in industrial products. Based on these inventions, some commercial activities evolved leading to worldwide sales and establishing new companies.
